La pêche au homard, une affaire de famille!
André Landry est un pêcheur aguerri dont la mer est le gagne-pain depuis plus de trente ans. Son fils Patrick, âgé de 26 ans, entreprendra cette année sa deuxième saison de pêche avec son propre bateau, le Nancy-Mona. Après avoir terminé son secondaire, Patrick, qui avait pêché les étés avec son père, a décidé qu’il ne voulait pas d’un travail de bureau. La mer, il l’a dans le sang et il a décidé de se lancer dans la pêche lui aussi. À une époque où la plupart des pêcheurs désertent ce métier traditionnel, Patrick a décidé de tenter sa chance.
En effet, quand son père a commencé a pêcher au quai de Robichaud dans les années 1980, une quarantaine de pêcheurs s’activaient au quai. Maintenant il n’en reste plus qu’une poignée.
Patrick fait donc partie d’une certaine relève. C’est d’ailleurs ce dont se réjouit son grand-père maternel Blair Léger, un vieux loup de mer qui a accompagné son petit-fils en mer pendant sa première campagne de pêche en 2015. Blair est fier que son petit-fils veuille poursuivre la tradition familiale et il entend bien partager avec lui les secrets du métier.
En plus du homard, André fait aussi la pêche du petit crabe au printemps et à l’automne, et Patrick pêche aussi le homard et le pétoncle en hiver dans la baie de Fundy. S’il y a une grande complicité entre Patrick et son grand-père Blair, entre son père André et lui, c’est plutôt une saine rivalité qui existe. Patrick dit ainsi en riant : « Peu m’importe combien de prises j’aurai, pourvu que je batte mon père! » .
Lobster fishing, a family business
André Landry is a seasoned fisherman and fishing has been his livelihood for over thirty years. As well as lobster, André also fishes for crab in the spring and fall. As for his son Patrick, 2016 will be his second fishing season (at age 26) with his own boat, the Nancy-Mona. After finishing high school, Patrick, who had spent his summers fishing lobster with his father, decided he did not want a desk job.
With the sea in his blood he decided to get in the fishing business too.
When his father started fishing at Robichaud wharf in the 1980s, forty fishermen were busy at the wharf. Now there are less than ten boats using Robichaud as their homeport.
Indeed, at a time when quite a few fishermen are leaving this traditional craft, Patrick decided to try his luck. Patrick’s maternal grandfather and old sea dog, Blair Léger, accompanied Patrick at sea in 2015 during his first fishing season. Blair is very proud that his grandson wants to continue the family tradition and he intends to share his secrets of the trade with him. Patrick also fishes lobster and scallop during the winter months in the Bay of Fundy.
There is a great comradery between Patrick and his grandfather Blair, and there is a healthy rivalry between Patrick and his father, André. Patrick laughs and says "I do not care how much I brought in as long as I beat my father!"
