Denise Landry
The Grand Barachois post office has been in its current location since 1921. Denise Landry, a resident of Grand Barachois since she was born, has worked at the post office for over 35 years and is still enjoying her career there.
From 1980 to 1988 she worked part time at the post office, plus she was a short order cook at Fishermen’s Paradise in Shediac, worked for her father at his fish shop in their back yard, shuttled deaf children to and from school, and cleaned homes.
In 1988 she started working full time as the local Postmaster, but that never stopped her from keeping busy in her “spare” time. With her husband Armand, she raised their two children, Denys and Debby, followed by a period of looking after her aging parents. Walter and Flora Gallant. For six years, Denise also looked after a child with spina bifida. During the summers, they are also busy renting out two cottages on the family property. Today, Denise is very happy that her daughter and youngest grand-daughter also live with her and Armand.
There have been a few notable changes since Denise started working at the post office, including the community name changing from Robichaud Office to Robichaud and now to Grand Barachois; implementation of civic addressing; reduction in money orders and increase in electronic MoneyGrams; fewer cards and letters being sorted; and the introduction of computers for tracking incoming and outgoing mail and parcels.
The most notable change is the social aspect. For many years, residents would gather and chat for a while… now it’s just a quick stop, but Denise still loves the personal interaction with the community.
Le bureau de poste de Grand-Barachois est logé dans l’édifice actuel depuis 1921. L’actuelle maîtresse de poste Denise Landry, originaire de Grand-Barachois, y travaille depuis plus de trente-cinq ans.
De 1980 à 1988, elle a occupé un poste à temps partiel au bureau de poste, tout en cumulant de nombreux petits métiers. Elle a ainsi été cuisinière au Fishermen’s Paradise de Shédiac, elle a travaillé avec son père à la poissonnerie qu’il tenait dans son arrière-cour. Elle a aussi conduit des enfants malentendants à l’école et elle a fait des ménages chez des gens.
En 1988, elle a été nommée maîtresse de poste à temps plein, mais cela ne l’a pas empêchée de se dévouer pour les autres dans ses temps libres. Avec son époux Armand, elle a élevé leurs deux enfants Denys et Debby suivit d’un période où elle s’est occupée de ses parents vieillissants. Le couple s’est aussi occupé pendant six ans d’une enfant atteinte de spinabifida. Les étés, le couple Landry s’occupait également de la location de deux chalets sur la propriété familiale. Aujourd’hui Denise se dit comblée, car sa fille habite chez elle avec la cadette de leurs petits-enfants.
Depuis que Denise a commencé à travailler au bureau de poste, il y a eu bien des changements, dont le nom de la communauté. Celle-ci s’appelait auparavant Robichaud Office, puis c’est devenu Robichaud (tout court) et maintenant c’est Grand-Barachois! Il y a ensuite eu la mise en œuvre des adresses civiques, une réduction de la demande de mandats-poste parallèlement à l’augmentation des transferts électroniques d’argent. De nos jours, il y a de moins en moins de courrier à trier. L’avènement des ordinateurs a changé bien des choses.
Le changement le plus notable, selon Denise, s’est fait au niveau social. Autrefois les résidents se rencontraient au bureau de poste où ils restaient jaser un petit moment. Maintenant, tout se fait plus vite… les gens entrent et sortent. Mais Denise apprécie quand même le contact qu’elle a avec les gens de la communauté.
