La Ferme McGraw

Comme leur père avant eux, pour un passe-temps Emery achète une dizaine de bovins avec son frère Jacques et commence un projet à long terme.   Vingt-cinq ans plus tard, le troupeau des deux frères McGraw compte environ 25 bovins, principalement de race Red Angus et Charolais qu’ils ont commencé à croiser avec success.

Emery adore les animaux et le métier de fermier. Tous les jours tôt le matin, il fait son tour à l’étable voir les animaux, leur donne de l’eau, du foin, des grains et même du pain à l’occasion afin de les gâter un peu.

L’étable et l’espace autour sont nettoyés à toutes les semaines.  Le fumier est accumulé et étendu sur les champs en automne. Les terres labourées sont ensemencées afin de produire des grains et du foin dont l’ensilage commence vers la fin juin.

Les vaches sont inséminées en juillet et vêlent en avril, un mois très occupé avec la naissance de 15 à 20 veaux chaque année.  Les veaux sont vendus en janvier et février.

Jacques, également fermier, gère sa propre ferme et les deux frères peuvent compter l’un sur l’autre en tout temps. Emery et Jacques s’entraident tant au point de vue des tâches quotidiennes que le partage et le maintien des machines agricoles.

Murielle Léger, la compagne d’Emery, l’accompagne de près dans son entreprise et s’occupe surtout de comptabilité. Elle aussi maintenant à la retraite, elle rêve d’apprendre à conduire un tracteur afin d’aider Emery dans certaines tâches.

 

 

 

The McGraw Farm

Following their father’s footstep, Emery acquired a few bovines with his brother Jacques to start a long term project.  Now 25 years later, the brothers’ co-owned cattle herds has about 25 bovines, mostly Red Angus and Charolais species that they have successfully started crossing.

 

Emery loves animals and the farm life. His days start early with farm chores, checking on the animals, providing water, hay and grains, and even an occasional treat of bread.

 

The barn and its surrounding are clean weekly.  The manure is accumulated in a pile to be later spread on the field in the Fall.  The fields are ploughed and seeded for grain and hay and ensilage follows near the end of June. 

 

The cows are inseminated in July and calve in April.  With 15 to 20 calves being born each year, April is a very busy month of the year.  The calves are sold in January and February.

 

Emery can count on the support of his brother and farmer, Jacques, who also runs his own farm.  The two help each other when it comes to daily farm activities as well as the sharing and maintenance of agricultural machinery.

 

Emery’s spouse, Murielle Léger, has been giving a hand with the farming enterprise, mostly with the accounting side.  Now retired, she is looking forward to fill her dream of learning to drive the farm tractor so to help Emery with the farm work.
